The Uterus Issue

Lorsque le thème de l’opposition entre nature et technologie s’est imposée à nous pour ce nouveau numéro, il semblait riche de possibilités. On pourrait parler de cyborgs, du rapport entre les femmes et les ordinateurs ou autres machines techniques, de l’insémination artificielle, des techniques de contraception, de la place des femmes dans les professions dites technologiques, ainsi que dans l’histoire de la technique, et pourquoi pas des godes, de la chirurgie esthétique ou réparatrice, des OGM, des machines dans les salles de fitness, des tracteurs, et que sais-je encore.

The theme of this dossier “nature versus technology” would allow us to write about many things. For example, cyborgs, the relationship between women and computers, reproductive technologies, the role of women in the history of technology, or why not dildos, esthetical chirurgery, genetically modified crops or the machines in fitness centers. Surprisingly we all chose to write about the normative role the understanding of ‘nature’ has played in constructing gender and especially the construction of women. We all chose to criticize how nature is used to control, regulate and re-orientate women towards how they are expected to be and what is expected of them. As if we as women directly inscribe the tools of technology onto our bodies and ourselves. The normative dimension of technology takes ­women’s bodies as their possessions : The object of the normative dimension of technology is women’s uterus. Hence, we have included a sub-title to this dossier, we could have called it the uterus issue !

In dit dossier wilden we natuur en technologie tegenover elkaar stellen, en daarvoor konden heel wat onderwerpen in aanmerking komen : cyborgs, vrouwen en computers, kunstmatige bevruchting, contraceptietechnieken, de plaats van de vrouwen in de geschiedenis van de techniek, en waarom ook niet dildo’s, esthetische of reparatieve chirurgie, GGOs, toestellen in de fitnesszaal, of nog veel meer. Merkwaardig genoeg hebben we allemaal iets geschreven om het normatieve discours te ondermijnen over de natuur van de vrouwen of van het vrouwelijk lichaam, en hoe elke afwijking van die zogezegde natuur gecontroleerd, gereguleerd, en opnieuw op het (sociaal) wenselijke pad van de norm ­gebracht moet worden. Alsof we, als vrouwen, het technologisch hulpmiddel onmiddellijk op ons lichaam zelf ­betrekken. Deze normatieve regulering via de techniek maakt het lichaam van de vrouw, en meer bepaald haar uterus, tot object - en dat is spijtig genoeg een historische constante. We moesten uiteindelijk onze eerste, overmatige ambities opgeven. Van het thema Natuur en Technologie biedt dit dossier dus slechts een eerste benadering, en we kozen daarom voor een mooie subtitel : The Uterus Issue !
